Accidentally posted this in the wrong section a second ago... I got a 1974 DT250 from a friend a couple weeks ago, very excited! It doesn't run at the moment, but it ran fine two years ago before my friend put it in storage. Engine turns over with good compression, but I'm getting no spark. Unfortunately, I have next to no experience working with the electrical components. I'm working my way through the bike with a multimeter, but I'm largely shooting in the dark. I took the stator cover off when I first got the bike and looked pretty crusty. I'm thinking that's the source of my issue, but I'm not sure. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated! I've attached all the photos that I think might be helpful.

Try cleaning the points with contact cleaner .
They can get some corrosion residue , which can stop them making a good connection
when they close . Maybe even scratch them with a screwdriver .

If its crusty under your stater cover I’m sure that’s your issue Take your stator cover off and clean best you can then do it again. Then take the flywheel off you will need a puller clean some more... your points may be frozen if so replace also check to see if they move freely with no obstructions ... clean contact points if you don’t replace them and probably a good idea to replace the condenser and the coil also points gap should be 12 to 16 thousandths. Do everything one at a time so you no what the issu was....good luck!

You'd be amazed what works when it looks past its useby date. Give the points a scratch with sone stiff enery cloth to stop it folding over if you can do it through the flywheel slot. Idealy need a flywheel puller--left thread 25mm fine thread comes to mind but common as dirt --[or rust]. If you can get if off then give it a wash & dry [sounds like a haircut]. To shortcut everything if you needed to you could simply hook the black that starts from the points/condenser & run it straight to the plug coil. If there a black/white originating from the same source just make sure its not connected as will be kill switch related--just kills the black one way or other. Important to tighten the flywheel good & solid or it'll shear off the crank key for sure. Just a thought too, i've seen points in mags of similar condition from sitting damp where they've stuck up on the pivot shaft & cam forces them open then fail to close. Magneto never fail but need a bit of pampering sometimes.--i hope lol. & welcome if you're new!!.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I'm tracking down a flywheel puller, going to see what I can make happen this weekend. Will report back.

Thanks for the help everyone, I got it running today! The points were fairly corroded/rusty, but some 600 grit sandpaper took care of that. Timing seems to be okay. One more question: Does the engine sound like it's idling okay? I think it might be knocking a bit, but I really don't know. Here is a link to a video I took today. Idling Video

Thanks again!
