I finally found a CT3 ignition that Ive needed on ebay, but of course it has no key. I have the number on the barrel but how do you transfer to a Yamaha key that works?

You will need the number on the top of the barrel, alongside where the key fits.

Once you have this, you can buy one through fleabay or through your local dealer - just give them the number, the year and model of the bike (this is just belt and braces) and they will have the records for what cut to make. Expect to pay $10 or thereabouts.

It is unlikely that it will be cut on a genuine Yamaha key, but an aftermarket make.

Again, yes I understand that. I have a number 1715 on my barrel. I'm looking for someone that can get me a Yamaha key by using this code. A locksmith wants to charge me $50, my local Yamaha dealer says they no longer do that. I figured someone has had this problem solved before.

Your locksmith is taking the pi**! 

Fleabay is probably your best bet then but, as I said, it's likely to be on a pattern key.

Now, someone like Enduronut, DEET etc might have the codes that cross reference the different Yamaha key profiles with the lock numbers that used them. If you can find this out, then find a blank key with that part number on fleabay (there are quite a few sellers of these), then you could ask one of the key cutters on fleabay if they will cut this original Yamaha key for you if you send it to them.
