Love the early vin with hollow front axle and alloy dipstick. I think the fork caps should be the vented variety. My owners manual says you can adjust the air pressure inside by pressing on a Schrader valve located on top of each cap and then compressing the forks and letting go of the valves.  That feature didn't last long and maybe not even through the 68 year....although my 12830 bike has them. Certainly have a great starting point to bring it back.

It's a very nice bike.  My feeling is basically what you just said about fender "I'd like to get the..."

I'd enjoy it and wouldn't sweat the details...  unless of course your goal is to get it as original as possible?  I just read an article from Hagerty that said something like the last few percent of making a bike original can cost way over half the total cost...  and the ROI just isn't there on the old bikes.  A "perfect" original isn't worth that much more than one that is near-perfect,

You have a first version kick start lever in the picture of it not on the bike. Suggest you not use it. It is fragile. Not many exist today. Yamaha changed it and made it stronger during the production run. You have a later stronger version on the bike.

I hope I don't appear greedy but send me a PM if you want to sell it.

Wow, lucky to have one so close to original. Talking fork caps, my december "68 forks have air release pins in the top to press. Talking gyt head i wonder about the cylinder now. Head--in theory--would squeeze too much comp out of it. Tried mine once & made the piston rattle twice as bad. Mind you it's loose anyway & i probably didn't pull the timing back to dt1mx 2.9 or something. Anyway--looks good & look even better when you find some rubbers for the speedo & tach.
