Bike identification was created by Grumman41

I’m hoping someone can shed light on this question, my newly purchased 360 enduro has 1970 on the title and correct VIN on the title and head tube. The VIN and bike components are correct for a 1972, is this normal?

Welcome!

Are you saying bike has been positively identified by VIN and "components" (engine number, reed valve intake, seat, tanks, forks, etc) to be a 1972 RT2?

If title says it's a 1970 then no, that's not "normal".

Original title was probably lost and someone told the DMV it was a 1970 model when a new title was issued.

If you want to know for sure what you have, post pictures of the bike and VIN on frame and engine.  There also should be a certification decal on the steering head that would have had the production date (month/year) of manufacture.  If it's missing or not legible, DEET may be able to make you a new one.

Not to hijack this thread, but how does one enter a 1970 vin into NICB when it requires a 17 digit vin, and is the badge necessary to get a vermont plate? My dt1 has no plate, but the vin is stamped into the steering neck where the badge would be. Vin matched the engine vin when i got it, but i replaced that case half due to a gigantic hole in the bottom.

NICB does not require a 17 digit VIN.  www.nicb.org/vincheck  Do not use dashes or spaces.

CycleVIN also does not require 17 digits.  I run it with and without dash there.

Hit send too soon. Vermont only uses frame number if I remember correctly. Some states require engine number.

Number stamped into frame and/or engine is what's important. I'm not sure what concern about "badge" is for Vermont? You just fill out the form. No inspections are needed.

I’ve been out of town so I haven’t been able to verify all components. But yes, title says 1970. I’ve only got this one picture, may just let sleeping dogs lie? It’s never been an issue to title for former owners.
There has been an issue with uploading pics to this site, I’ll try to get more info when I’m home.

All the parts I see from the taillight to the front forks and everything in between says 72. If it is a 70 (Vin will tell) then someone swapped out most of the bike with 72/73 parts. I’ve bought bikes with wrong year on title. Dealing with the DMV to get it changed on the title probably isn’t worth it. I haven’t found them to willing to do something out of the ordinary.

Thanks for the input guys, I’m just going to roll with this. Probably too much trouble to change.

I started the registration process on my 1957 Matchless in 1982, when I finished the process I had a 1982 Matchless (which was only 15 years after the last real Matchless rolled off the assembly line). I first registered the Matchless in CA and when I moved to AZ they still would not let me change it. I tried to change it in CA and again in AZ with no luck. You definitely have a 72 RT2 but yes changing it is not going to be easy so let it go.

My Matchless is now in the UK (where it belongs) and the new owner finally succeeded in getting it registered in the UK as a 1957. I couldn't do it in the US.
