Registering imported bike without title was created by mbutchers
Hey Chaps.
I bought my bike just under a year ago from a chap on EBay UK.
I’ve just finished the restoration, and now need to register with the DVLA.
I have the original import/customs paperwork, but I have no title.
Anyone else had this before, and know what the process is?
I’ve read that it might be possible to get a letter from an owners club or such like.
Any advice/info gratefully received

Most imports don't have the original title documents (well, mine don't!).
Download form V55/5 from Gov website - hardly any of the questions actually need completing, so maybe post a request here if you need a hand. Charge is £55.
I, and others, have used Paul Dawkins from the aircooledrd club for dating letters - he charges £30. Other clubs will offer the same service. Again, post here if you need contact details.
I have completed the declaration saying that no MoT is needed due to age of bike, but I'm not sure that it is actually necessary.
Send everything, including id evidence, to DVLA and await their response.
I have just sent off V55/5s for two of my bikes and DVLA want to inspect both. No problem there, but it just adds another month or so to the process.

You can get a dating cert from the VJMC UK from Richard Proudman. £36.00 or there abouts. Clear pictures of the engine and frame numbers, Two pics of the bike and don't chop bits of the wheels off on the shots.
You will need your NOVA cert.
Three forms of ID including a picture . Driving licence or passport, bill and bank statement or council tax bill. Take your account number out.
The dating cert.
Write a letter briefly explaining you didn't get a Title with the bike as you got it through an importer , it has the bill of sale in the UK and NOVA cert which was issued by the HMRC for tax purposes and your bike was imported by a specialist, both proof of payment of tax. Something along those lines and fire it off to DVLA by registered post.
I have waited as little as five weeks and as long as a year through the stalling tactics DVLA can use dependent on if you get a jobs worth or someone who thinks laterally.
You can get the forms on line .

If your bike was imported from Connecticut you might be able to get away with it.
I have a Kawasaki H2 Triple that was imported into the UK with no Title from Conneticut, aparrently in Conneticut some older vehicles are not required to have a title.
I managed to get a letter from a Conneticut State Dept to that effect and had no problems getting it registered with no title in the UK.
The DT 400 I recently bought came with a full title from Ohio.
Good luck.

"I'm surprised they want to inspect the bikes Alan ? is this a first time event as never had any problems with the 3 or 4 I have done ?"
Maybe just luck of the draw and they sample, say, 10% of requests? Anyway, as they contract out the viewing now, it will cost them a bit of dosh. Also, Covid probably greatly reduced the number of site visits that were deemed necessary.

Here's a recycled reply from an earlier thread asking the same thing.
"It doesn't need to be insured or MOT'd to obtain a registration.
If it's an import then first thing to do if you don't have a NOVA certificate is contact HMRC to see if it has one.
Personal Transport Unit (PTU)| Customs Belfast| 0300 3227071.
I rang them about an AT2 frame and engine and they emailed me the NOVA details.
Once, you have the NOVA details you'll need a dating certificate.
Tinkicker is right VJMC can do one or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at the Aircooled RD Club does them and charged me £30 for the last one and sent it really quickly.
Fill in the V55.
Write a cover letter explaining why you don't have a title for the bike, below is what I've sent with a couple of my applications.
"Dear Sirs
Vehicle Identification Number CT1-00000
Please accept this letter explaining why no original non-UK registration document has been supplied with my application.
I purchase the vehicle from a private seller, Mr X, Cambridgeshire.
I was not given any other documents other than a hand written receipt which I have included with the other required documents.
I purchase the vehicle as a non-running restoration project, and I am well on the way with the necessary repairs and the motorcycle is now road worthy, hence why I am applying to register it.
I have included the dating letter required."
Hope this helps.
Pete"
