Hi
Any good tips or guides  for compressing rings and getting the barrel on without damaging my fingers or rings?
or do I just buy a ring compressor from tool mart?
thanks

Nice job and great idea!

I've never used a ring compressor on these bikes...  sometimes I wish I had an extra set of hands to hold cylinder up.

I've fabricated nice compressor using a worm hose clamp of the correct size.  I cut the band off and bend two finger thingys....I have also used the clamp as-is and then removed it after..either way worked terrific for me.  Still helpful to have another person around to hold the cylinder!

Depending on the motor you could lie the bike on its side so gravity is overcome then with it sitting on the studs like a DT3 250 or the like, then can controll it over the rings. Tis a fiddle i know, & worse if no decent lead in on the cylinder liner.

Guess I didn't know better...old Yamaha shop manual just shows the mechanic compressing the rings with left hand and grabbing the cylinder with right hand and sliding it on. Done. I've used ring compressors assembling car engines but the 360 and 400 bikes go together as the shop manual shows.

It is a completely different process when you can’t slide the piston into the cylinder, then bolt it to the crankshaft…
It’s like…. Learning a new trick if you haven’t played with these..

I did check  Dt1-e service manual and yes the process was clearly shown as you described and I gave it a go but tbh I didn’t want to damage the rings ….. I had to have a rebore to 4th over as it was siezed when I acquired the bike and the piston I have is keystone and not flat ring so I was probably being over careful as there aren’t that many around atm …..

good to hear other options etc so thanks for your input guys!
cheers
