First registration in the uk was created by ThatGuy
I've currently got a 77 dt400 that I'm building back up to be in the road, and figured while I'm getting it all sorted ill try and get it registered so when the time comes all i need to do is take it for a first mot and be done with it.
ive had a quick look around the interwebs and asked a few people about the process and i think to get it registered i need a certificate of conformity and a dating letter? to give me all the info i need to fill out a V55 form for the DVLA.
heres wheere im a little stuck, see this is the first time ive had to do anything like this and ideally if someone can talk me through the process it would make it easier for my small brain hah. So is it just those two forms i need to get to get it on the road? then once ive got a plate registered for the bike is it just a matter of getting the bike its first MOT and aapplying for th etax exemption?
Any help would be awesome as ideally id like the get the bike on the road this year.
Thanks all

First. If the bike is an import, you need an import certificate called a Nova certificate. This establishes that the bike has been imported and all import duties have been paid.
Then you need to contact the Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club for a dating letter as Yamaha UK cannot offer this service. Pay the fee and get a dating letter. Then you apply for an age related registration number. The bike will need to be insured, but you can insure it on the VIN number alone.
There is a copy of a dating letter for my bike on my thread here: (post number 12).

I agree that, if an import, then see if there is a NOVA number. However, might not be a disaster if you can't find one, as DVLA should pick it up themselves, if there is one.
You won't need any MoT, as the bike is over 40 years old. Also, I didn't need any insurance when I applied for my own first registration a couple of weeks ago.
You won't need a certificate of conformity, as it is exempt by age.

It doesn't need to be insured or MOT'd to obtain a registration.
If it's an import then first thing to do if you don't have a NOVA certificate is contact HMRC to see if it has one.
Personal Transport Unit (PTU)| Customs Belfast| 0300 3227071.
I rang them about an AT2 frame and engine and they emailed me the NOVA details.
Once, you have the NOVA details you'll need a dating certificate.
Tinkicker is right VJMC can do one or This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. at the Aircooled RD Club does them and charged me £30 for the last one and sent it really quickly.
Fill in the V55.
Write a cover letter explaining why you don't have a title for the bike, below is what I've sent with a couple of my applications.
"Dear Sirs
Vehicle Identification Number CT1-00000
Please accept this letter explaining why no original non-UK registration document has been supplied with my application.
I purchase the vehicle from a private seller, Mr X, Cambridgeshire.
I was not given any other documents other than a hand written receipt which I have included with the other required documents.
I purchase the vehicle as a non-running restoration project, and I am well on the way with the necessary repairs and the motorcycle is now road worthy, hence why I am applying to register it.
I have included the dating letter required."
Hope this helps.

Ah man you guys are amazing, thanks for all the info.
It is an import from the states and it did come with a nova when I bought it which is a plus. So are you saying all I need is a dating letter to get it registered? And will it need an mot atall? I know its mot and tax exempt but when I spoke to the tester when getting my other bike done he said that it'll need an initial mot once it's been registered, is that not the case? I mean if not then great because everything I own never passes first try hah

Without the US Title you will need to write the cover letter to go with the dating certificate.
If you read the guide it tells you this and as I said it was needed on the bikes I've registered that didn't have a Title.

Yes, Richard Proudman if you apply for a dating cert through the VJMCC. Make sure you follow the instructions when you get the registration pack.
Even then it's possible to get a rejection for something petty. I have registered bikes in as little as five weeks and as long as a year.
Don't let them blind you with BS as well. The form looks complicated but you only fill in one third due to the bikes exemptions. When your asked for pictures on the certification, ensure the whole bikes in the shot, tyres included so there's no issue. Good clear pics of the frame and engine number too.

"I have registered bikes in as little as five weeks"
My first one, which I did in April, only took three weeks, and that included Bank Holidays. Maybe DVLA are finally getting their act together.
Oh, and last time I checked, they still hadn't banked my cheque!

Or maybe they're waiting for my next six, so that they can bank them all together!
