Im putting this in gen discussion because it looks like the custom sub area does not get used. Hope that is ok.
Im 50 years old, enjoy riding, but no need anymore for the noise, smoke, power, etc. Currently have 75 dt250 and 73 ct175. wanting a "newer 4 stroke.
BUT, in my opinion they are butt ugly. So I would like to have a newer 4 stroke in a early 70's dt body. 250cc is just fine. I would like opinions on what makes the most sense to get his. Im handy but not a mechanic. Prefer bolt on mods but can do small easy mods. My thoughts are:
*Put a newer 4 stroke engine in an old rolling 73 360/250 chasis.
Maybe from an xt250, sr250, ???
*find a sr250/exciter and put an enduro seat, fenders, tires, etc on it and go.
*find a 2015+ sr400 and do the same. (This one is 100 lbs heavier) but fuel injected.
I asked for your opinions so let me have it.
Thanks

Look for a 2017 Yamaha SCR950. It was discontinued by Yamaha after only one year of production because there aren’t many people like you and me who want a newer four stroke with an older scrambler style look. They can be picked up cheap compared to any other new bike of similar capacity.

that is sharp, but i do still like off road therefore wanting something lighter. thats why i am leaning on the 250's or the sr400.

I think you're talking big project to shoehorn a new four stroke into an old two stroke frame?  Maybe find a 70's-80's XT?

"74 on frames have more room as the motor grew longer---year of the change--& probably more height too as i think the exhaust goes over the top, kind of. DT250/360A etc.

want to stay away from big project fabrication. and want o stay with early 70s look. Ive considered the 70-80s xt just prefer the early dts. thanks markt.

are the 250 and 360 frames the same?
is a sr250 frame strong enough for off road(mild off road, not motorcross)?

thanks

Well wrote a long response and the damn phone deleted it with an unintended swipe. Japanese got one, the xt225 “bronco” version. This guy has a Ct2 tank on his and it looks pretty good.

the new bikes ride so much better off-road, and the four stroke engine is a lot taller. I think the best route would be to get an xt225 and retro it rather than put a newer engine in an old frame. The newer xt250 frame can’t take an old gas tank without extensive custom fabrication, thus the xt225 suggestion, even if the fuel injected xt250 is a better machine.

My scramblerized 2013 xt250. It was ugly as sin when I got it cheap. To some it probably still is ugly as sin.

for more inspiration look up lbc motorcycles in Argentina, they make just what we dream of

damn that yellow bike is perfect. why cant yamaha just make a new enduro like that??
the first pic dont look bad. maybe a little tall(could be the pic) but i think i like that.
i have ruled out the motor swap i think.

i might check into the xt225.
I have been looking at the sr250's and have been leaning that way a little.
thanks for the thoughts

Ok, I got a 2004 xt225. One happened to come up for sale. I like it although havent rode much due to weather. Will ride it this summer and retro it come winter. or before.
QUESTION: Is there a way to know what tank will fit this bike. Would like a dt 250/360 tank preferably. it looks like a xt500 tank might be taller and look better.
I have a 75 dt250 i can try the tank for fit. I will start there.
But if it doesnt, is there something to look for that will tell me if another tank will fit or not. Really dont want to buy a bunch of tanks in hope they do.
Any thoughts on this?
thanks

That red one I posted is a xt225 frame with a '72 175 CT2 tank on it. I wonder if they had to mod it to fit or not? Clearly it's at least possible. If a 250/360 tank would fit, the extra gas sure would be nice.
