So when my 74' Suzuki TS185 gas tank got attacked by Santa in the moving trailer, I was told that original tank was trashed and couldn't be fixed by two different repair shops. So I bought another tank on Ebay that had surface rust and was useable. That tank is being restored right now. It came with this original locking gas cap which needs to be rechromed.
I don't know squat about the chroming process.
QUESTION: Can this cap be rechromed as-is or would it have to be taken apart, and is that even possible?

BTW- I found a place in Ohio that IS restoring my original gas tank. He said he would rather take out a dent than work on a rusty tank.
So I will have two restored tanks now.  :-(

Did anyone suggest sending the dented tank to a paintless dent removal person ? There are several who specialize in motorcycle tanks and can work miracles. I speak from experience.

Hi Doug,
The rubber seal is shot so you need to remove that and get a replacement, otherwise it will likely leak gas on the new paint job.
As far as chrome plating goes my experience has been leave the metal parts assembled on something like this, their processes have little effect on the mechanical parts underneath & actually leaves them with a dull protective finish.
Chrome plateing shop should be able to advice you based on above pictures

You'll need to disassemble the cap down to only the piece you want plated.

Hey Doug I would see if you could buy a new one chrome plating has gone crazy expensive due to the epa regulations. They probably would like to have the lock and rubber removed

Thank you Dave. I will hunt a new seal down. Hopefully someone sells one. I don't see the part # in the parts manual, but I'm sure there is one to be found.
