RT1 Compression was created by ckjacks

My 1971 RT1 360 is back together but not running right.  It does not want to rev out.  When it gets to about 5000 RPM's it starts stuttering and will not go any higher.  I have not checked the compression and was wondering what it should be on a healthy engine.  Any ideas on the stuttering would be greatly appreciated.  It feels or seems like the timing is off but it is set correctly (I think!).  Thank you all!!

Correct carb, jets and air filter? Also, maybe the air filter has been over oiled? Perhaps try, briefly, without the air filter in place, just to see what difference this makes.

Bunged up exhaust might also lead to your symptoms.

Thanks. Carb has been cleaned and jets are stock. I thought about the air filter, too. It doesn't look too oily but I am going to try it without it. I cleaned the end of the exhaust where the removable tip is. Not sure about further up.

And it's the correct carb for the bike? I only ask, because I found out rather late in the day that my own RT2 had a carb from a RT1 carb fitted. Also, my CT1 came to me with a CT2 carb fitted!

How is the o-ring seal in the bottom of the float bowl?

Going from answers to previous posts on this subject, I don't think that Yamaha published any compression specs. Happy to be corrected, though.

By stuttering, if you mean rich 4 stroking symptoms there's really only two reasons--well 3 maybe if somethings blocking the airbox intake--. So two are--Carb jet setter Oring sealing into the bowl & hence the main jet. Other important one--my first pick-- is the exhaust restriction in the spark arrestor in the end section & probably a built in item not removable.

Thank you. I thought the o ring was OK when I cleaned the carb, but maybe it did not get re-installed properly. I'll check it this weekend.

Thanks, Mark.  I know that O ring is critical. I will recheck it this weekend!
