Trying to figure out what the little handle next to the clutch is on this 74 DT175? Just starting to get this guy all cleaned up but don’t know what it is and can’t find it in the manuals I have…

Picture would help. But sounds like someone added an aftermarket compression release. It was a fad when these bikes were new.

Yup, aftermarket compression release. It can be used to stop the engine or as sort of a "Jake Brake" engine brake to slow the bike down on a hill.
I had one on my Yamaha back in the 1970's... they don't work as a brake that well, make a mess, and can suck dirt into the engine. I'd take it off the bike or you can try it first if you want. Best feature is it makes a cool BRAAAAAP! sound.
