Yamaha AT1 starting/idling problems was created by JeepGoneEnduro
Hey guys, I just put a post of my two bikes in the introductions forum. Sorry for this long post, I’m new and I’m going crazy.
I have two Yamaha AT1’s with only one in running condition. The bike started first kick no problem, even if I left it alone for a month. In trying to get the second bike operational, I swapped parts from the running bike to check what was wrong with the non-running bike. No dice. In putting the original running bike back together, that bike no longer runs either. I had to forget the project temporarily so I could focus on graduating college. 3 months later I got back to the bikes. After about two hours of messing with the original running bike, at 4am I got it running on the first kick multiple times (don’t say it was me high on gasoline fumes, I got it on video XD). It seemed to be a carb issue. I put the bike back together, including the crappy air filter, tried to start it and the bike bogged down and died immediately. I went to bed to focus on it the next day. That morning I took the air filter off and tried to kick start the bike, I had to do it about twenty times with the choke off to get the bike going and not flood the carb. The bike would run but it would only idle for 20 seconds before stopping. It only got worse. I hit the kick starter probably 100 times. I finally took it to a hill to push start it. It would run every other time I push started it. As long as I rode the bike it would be fine, but as soon as I put it on neutral to let it idle it would cut off. I know these bikes need a fully charged battery to run. The battery may be bad, and it starts better right off the charger. But if it runs as is from a push start, the battery wouldn’t cause it to die at idle would it? Any other idea of what’s going on would be great!

Have you cleaned the carb, including blowing out all the small passageways with your air compressor? And have you checked the manual available here in the Tech Library on the toolbar above to see that you have the right jets in the carb? And the right beginning settings for the air screw and the idle screw? Gas tank clean and is delivering the right amount of gas through the petcock (which also may need cleaning? New gas (91 octane)? New spark plug of the right spec, not just what's in there, as the PO might not have been running the right one? Air filter cleaned and properly (sparingly) oiled? Cold air duct is sealing well? Have you tried running a business card or a worn out piece of 600 sandpaper both ways through the points? Sometimes they get glazed over and work intermittently.
Try all that and get back with us. We got more ideas.
And congrats on the college degree! I got two myself...
