I'm going to go out on a limb and say, "well enough" is not good enough with an RT. "Well enough" is asking for ankle and foot damage. Others more familiar with the RT will chime in with a 'for sure' on your timing. But that the RT's timing is critical, is my understanding, both to run well and for your physical protection.

On that, I'll go back to my stable of ATs and CTs. and my lone DT250A.

If the mark on the flywheel is showing clockwise of the tab with the strobe...  and assuming the tab and mark line up with piston the correct distance BTDC (should be verified with a dial indicator), your timing is advanced, not retarded.

fair enough, fair enough!! more precision is needed!

when setting the timing previously with a dial gauge (@ 2.5mm instead of 2.9mm), we settled on something that was conservative in order to get it going and make sure we were on the right track.  Curious that the strobe indicated a slightly ADVANCED condition... not exactly sure what to make of that.  Will likely have to re-open the head and get the dial gauge back on it.

correct me if i am wrong though... a retarded timing would afford easier starting and less power output, right?  advanced timing would increase kickback risk, but generally result in more power being harnessed from each intake charge combustion?
