DT175mx 1978 - fitting needle etc was created by MikeK-uk

Hello again,Continuing to reassemble the bike after engine rebuild and having trouble putting the carb back together.I will try to describe as pictures won’t upload at the moment. As the carb came apart…There is the slide,The throttle cable locates into a hole in the slide.A small metal plate is then placed on top and rotated to lock the throttle cable in place. The needle drops through a hole in the plate and rests on the needle clip. All this goes together whilst fiddling with the spring. That’s all there was when the carb came apart. The needle is located by its clip and weight. So the needle can very easily be pushed up from the bottom of the slide. It just sits loosely in place. Is that correct? I have looked at lots of part’s diagrams and none have a plate like mine. Also the slide is very slow to drop or sticks. Should the slide be lubricated? It doesn’t seem right and not sure why. Many thanks in advance for any advice.Mike

On my RD carbs the plate sits on top of the needle - there will be a hole in the centre of the plate to facilitate this. The big spring on top, then the screw on cap holds everything in place.

Can be tricky, needle with circlip on drops into slide.
Put the spring over the cable end and compress it into the cap and hold on to it.
Feed the cable nipple through the slotted hole in the slide and slide the cable so that it sits at the other end of the slotted hole.
Now fit the cable stopper plate and let the spring hold everything in place.
The slide should be free moving within the carb when assembled.

In the past, I have used a couple of small crocodile clips to hold the compressed spring into the underside of the carb lid, that way it is out of the way.

Let me know if you run out of cuss words. Because I just got done installing my carb on a DT175C and I used the whole library until I gave up and removed the airbox to simultaneously install them both.  I sounded like Chevy Chase in Christmas Vacation when he went on that infamous rant about his boss!

The needle is located by its clip and weight. ???

No, by clip to needle, and clip to plate.

There is some needle movement when loaded properly.(.005" or so)

I got it wrong (no surprise!). Fitted the needle, then the plate and much more stable now. And it’s the same as a mikuni diagram i eventually found.
What a berk!
Thank you!

No problem Mike.

Good you're onto it now.
Just be careful the needle actually finds its way into the needle jet as they don't always drop straight in.
Just feel the slide is free to settle right down.
Slide has a side guide pin to--to locate it in the right orientation for the cutaway.
So things to consider--Needle in jet--slide on guide pin--they don't make it easy do they, & those two things pretty much happen together.
Maybe slide goes in a fraction before the needle finds the jet.
You'll now immediately if needle misses the jet as slide will stop going in.
