Safe cruising RPM? was created by AirborneSilva

So I've come to the conclusion that my DT2 is NOT a highway bike and never will be but is a good run around town and hopefully I'll be able to find me some dirt to play on now and again.  So, I was wondering what a safe cruising RPM is for these motors, I know they are tough but I can't imagine running at 6500 would be a good thing.  Back when I was a youngster, many years ago, we/I didn't worry about it but being older and somewhat wiser I do have that concern.  Thanks!  Tony

I'd guess these bikes aren't suitable for cruising what you chaps call the freeway! More at home on our UK country lanes, where you're not keeping them at constant revs for miles on end.

With my CT-1 and 17 tooth front sprocket, at 5500 RPM I'm doing 55. That seems like a very comfortable cruising speed, though I occasionally get it up to 60+ and I think that's fine at 6,000 RPM as well. I'll never take this bike on the freeway, but along nearby Pacific Coast Highway is the only place where I take it up to 60. These dual sport tires also get a little bit squirrely at high speeds, and I'm cautious when cornering as well.

As long as bike is in decent mechanical condition and you're jetted right and oiled right...  as far as the engine is concerned you can safely cruise as long as you want at redline.

Hi Alan, yeah we have freeways and highways, both different but have similar speeds between 65 and 80 MPH.

Hi Tom, I did take my bike on a road going to the gym the other day that was 55 MPH speed limit, it was only for a bit over a mile, I was turning about 5300 RPM with stock 14 tooth front.  I did have a 16 tooth front on but didn't like the loss of low end power, I may buy a 15 tooth and give that a shot.  I need to change the counter shaft seal anyway so that'd be a good time to try the 15 tooth.

Thanks Mark, I don't know how comfortable I feel at that but you're a lot more versed in these bikes than I am for sure.  I do think I have the carb dialed in.  after my ride today and having had moved the needle last might to the second from the bottom I took a look at the plug which was a nice healthy shade of brown.  When I got the bike going, before I had the top end work done, I tested the oil pump which is in spec.
