DT2 Spark Arrester Removal. was created by Bamos3
I have aquired a pipe for my DT2 which came with no baffle fitted. According to the parts manual the baffle has a vaned tip as part of the removable baffle unit. My pipe has the bullet / vane section inside but it appears to be permanent. . Anyone know if it should be removable?
This is a link to the item on the parts list.

I'm guessing you're looking at the built in spark arrestor & i'm thinking back 50 years. So if ya looking in with a light & see a bullet thingy then around the outside of that is like a jet engine looking angled vanes spark arrestor. I could be wrong but that's what i recal. & they get blocked up with carbon but we won't go there untill you complain of lack of top end. We used to knock them forward to break the spot weld the coax them back out. Then think @##$%$ it's loud. Best to leave it in there in this modern world with rules & all that & if neccessary burn the whole pipe out if lacks getup & go. Think i'd make up a baffle quite a bit longer that the pipe end using perforated tune & plenty of noise deadening fiberglass around it & with an outer skin if ya handy with a gas weder ot tig-mig etc. Anyway--getting away from your question--forgotten it now. Cheers. ps Had a DT2 New in "72.

This has cropped up before . Search for a thread " Muffler Confusion " by Dave the Wave , 13 Nov 2017 .
It will answer your question . ( excuse me not providing a link , as it's beyond my technical capabilities ).

Yes, looks permanent. I filled the pipe with a super strong caustic soda solution for a couple of days and then cleaned it out with a high pressure drain cleaning attachment up and down the the pipe from the head end. Cleaned out lots of crud, so I'll make do with that, and will fabricate an end piece.

I hope the caustic solution works & sounds like you've given it a good go. But if it's still showing signs of restriction then putting it in the bonfire is a surefire cure.

I've given it a good blast all over with a large propane torch as well, getting good and hot. Layed an impressive smoke screen for a while.

Ok, ya on the right track. At work in extreme case we had a powerful propane torch & get the pipe burning on the inside then put the compressed air in & watch it all the carbon come out. There's a danger of melting stuff if not careful. Nowdays 'retired' i just put the complete exhaust in a bonfire down the farm that i might have going & leave it in overnight as feel its more gentle with nothing actually moving like with air going through it.
I'd be tempted to put your torch down the tail end though & get the arrestor glowing red & a bit of a blow to see what moves. Sorry to keep pushing the point--i do go on lol & seen some extreme cases in 60 plus years.

the danger of melting a pipe is real
I melted my 400E muffler after pointing an idling weed eater blower at coals in my Weber kettle with the intent of increasing heat, which I succeeded in doing....that cost me 2 Franklins unfortunately
