Sounds like you're keen to hear my --get you by--ideas haha. Hope Marks not looking. Seeing the back plate can't be moved, you can't be too far wrong by just fitting new points & set the gap to 12+, or less than 14 & see how she runs. Can't be too far out & thinking under 15 would have it less likely to kick back as they do if you soft kick them. It's just waiting to get you lol. If the decompression valve is working it'll soften the kick over compression & soften any kick back if its in a bad mood. Timing when you get serious is 2.9mm btdc on a 360.

There's actually a pointer & a mark in the flywheel window which is meant to be the 2.9mm breaking mark for the points--providing no-one has bent it fiddling with things. Could just tighten the screw with points touching/breaking at the mark & see what gap you end up with around a bit when open. Or when you check it by piston distance at a later date just see if the pointer lines up for future checking.

Umm, not sure where to go from here. Wish i lived close. Can you load a pic or two of how things are now. Wire onto the points must 'Not' touch earth. Has to sit on top of the insulating washer so its finds its way through the the points spring the otherside of the steel bit. Also the little bolt passes through a small circle of fiber to centralise the small connection bolt so it doesn't wander sideways & earth out. Also the points spring strip must sit on the insulating washer so as not to touch earth. I'm making a pigs ear of describing. MarkT is good a pictures & drawings.
Just reralised i've been here previously a couple of times. I see the original pic, Another updated one would be great please to see how you have things fitted--if fitted.
