Looking for a start- RT2 360 was created by Isaac-RT2

Hello all, new to the form and was hoping to get some advice.

I recently picked up a non running 1972 RT360 from an old lady for $100! Wasn’t looking for another bike but obviously couldn’t pass up a deal like that. Apparently the lady’s son picked it up while serving in Vietnam and disassembled and shipped it back to the US after his tour.

While the bike is in pretty good condition, she had stored it outside for the past 3 years… it was filthy and rusty.

Since bringing it home,I’ve only cleaned it up and tried to figure out what it needs.

What I know it’s missing: Main switch and key, coil, battery/battery box, air filter and air box cover, and spark plug.

Today I put on a cheap eBay coil (I think it’s the right one?)  and tried to get spark. I had read these can spark without a battery so I’m just starting there.

I plugged in the coil, connected the Green &white, red & brown, and the black black/white.

Kicked it- no spark.

So far I’ve really struggled to find info on these bikes and could use as much guidance as I can get.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Welcome from NZ. To keep it simple & easy at the moment, just find the black from the mag loom & hook it straight to the coil. If then no spark then give points a scratch clean through the flywheel slot if you don't want to pull the flywheel. Make sure you can see them opening & closing a little. 15 thou aint much but can pretty much eyeball guess that much watching through the slot. Hope she starts & runs. Oh, & if flywheel off tighten 'very tight'.

I agree with RT325.  You may be killing the spark with your connections...  which sound like they are at the key?

Just connect points wire to ignition coil, leave everything else disconnected.

I agree with RT325, clean points, gap to 14 thousands perhaps even replace them, attach black wire from the stator to the coil, if that doesnt do it make sure the magnets/pick ups are clean under the flywheel if that dont do it then id suggest buying an original used coil. Ive tried those cheapys on ebay that are new and say they work and they dont.

Yo, thanks all for the guidance, I’ll try to crack into it this weekend. Hooking the mag to the coil makes sense but something wouldn’t have done otherwise - super helpful!

with the amount of water trapped in the signals and the corrosion on the compression release, it’s probably a good guess that the points need some attention. Thanks for the specs!

Thanks again everyone for the help!

If the flywheel magnets get rusty they'll need a light sanding to get spark as well. Fun color, looks clean and quite complete!

Yo, thanks for suggestion! I connected the black wire from the mag straight to the coil- no spark… After opening it up, it’s clear why- tons of corrosion on everything…
taking off the flywheel tomorrow to give everything a good clean and property assess the situation.

I tried to look up disassembly for the fly wheel in the manuals and didn’t see much. Are there any special tricks to getting it off (opposite thread, etc?)

Again, thanks for all the help!

definitely reverse threads and you'll need the correct tool to spin in there to remove it and a flywheel holder to remove the nut prior. both seem to be available on Amazon.

Motion Pro 08-0026 for the flywheel puller. You can try to save a couple bucks on cheaper off brand ones but they are absolute junk and will probably bend or break in use based off mine and others experience.

And thoroughly clean the threads in the flywheel. The puller needs to thread all the way in. If it doesn't get enough bite it can strip out.
