Rust in gas tank. was created by Yamrt3

I noticed some surface rust on the bottom of the tank inside and wondering the best way to get rid of it before I add oil to the tank to store it for a few months while I work on other issues on the bike. Thanks.

I used Evaporust from O'Reilly auto parts. It worked great and I was able to do 3 tanks with the same jug so far. I made sure to heat dry the tank until all moisture was definitely gone after the treat and flush. Didn't get any flash rust and frankly didn't need to oil it in the short term probably good to do if you're storing for a while.

I'm having a hard time to find Evaporust here in British Columbia. I would prefer to use that. What I can get is Muriatic acid that I hear works very well and quickly. It looks like nasty stiff though. Your thoughts on this product.

Have you tried Princess Auto (Canada’s version of Harbour Freight)?

Any acid seems overkill for what you described as surface rust.  Acid eats away at the steel and the rust.  Evaporust removes rust and doesn’t affect the steel. I used it on my tank with good results.

White Vinegar, leave it in for a day and pressure wash out. I have a large jar of small screws that I also put in and tumble around for a few minutes. Then rinse out with Methylated Spirits and then line with WD-40.

I didn't think of Princess Auto as it is 2 hours from me so I don't get there for much because most of what I need I can get where I live. Great info. Much appreciated.

Apparently I can get Evaporust from Princess Auto which I will do the next time i'm in Victoria. In the mean time, I'll try the vinegar with some small nuts and screws and see how that works as it will be a while before I can get Evaporust.

Now I'm back on track. Thanks.

Maybe just screws and not nuts. The sharp threads on the screws provide a scraping action when shaken. Also some even count how many they put in so they know how many need to come out. If something gets stuck in a seam or something it may come loose and block the fuel supply.

That's good to know. Makes perfect sense. I'm actually going out to the garage to do the tank right now. I assume the vinegar is full strength with no dilution.

Note that any acid (including vinegar!) will eat up the petcock and can destroy it.
