Update:
Had a little time this afternoon to start working on the Exhaust pipe for the MX Project... As I detailed earlier the Bike came with a Stock pipe but Rick was kind enough to send along a Hooker Pipe with the bike when I bought it from him.
It was missing the Chrome Hooker heat shield which is ok as I want to try to make it look more original for the bike.. Since I do not have a true GYT pipe nor would I spend the money required to get one- Haha!

I am going to try to make my own heat shield that I think will work and look pretty good.
I am taking a Metal Mesh Gutter Guard i bought from from Home Depot- a whole $3.80 and to see if I can make this work.

The good thing is this metal is very easily manipulated to shape and form it as needed... First step was to lay it on the pipe and just start pushing it into place- bending / curving where needed while trimming excess along the way.

With a little work it takes shape!

Its laying on the pipe pretty nicely-

I will need to clean up the cut edges a bit to make it looked finished.... then the issue will be how to attach it to the pipe.. the pipe metal is very thin and the mesh is likely aluminum or some sort... Will try to lightly tac it in spots along the welded joints on the pipe to anchor it....I see multiple practice runs on scrap metals I have with same thickness in my future before attempting the actual pipe...

what is the pump setup to run it through the filter? Seems like a great idea.

Hey pabdt-
Yeah there are alot of mod videos out there on how to upgrade / add different things to make the cleaner work a little more efficiently.... I will be using PCS-1000 from Tractor Supply and it runs $55.00 for a 5 Gallon can and will need two of them to get the tank pump under solvent so want to get as much life out of the solvent as possible.

Here is the Video that explains the set up and this is the kit I ordered from him... you might be able to save a few bucks putting all your own items and fittings to make it work... but for me and sake of running all over town... decided to just buy it complete.. It is good quality parts and will use a standard PH8A Fram oil filter.

A couple of other things I am going to do... I am going to mount my washer on a Furniture Dolly - it will not only allow me to easily move it around my shop and also roll it into a storage space out of the way when not using.... In addition it will raise the washer up and additional 3" making it more comfortable to use.

One other thing I think I will also do... is to place the flex washer pipe connection inside tank closer to the pump box which will allow more open space n that front right corner for smaller parts vs that way is mounted in the Video.

Just a little update... has been a bit crazy last couple of weeks and not much time in the shop..
I found a Perforated Metal sheet from Grainger and the price was pretty good for a 12" x 34" 20 gauge sheet with the same size holes and spacing that was on the GYT pipe... So I decided to maybe scrap the wire gutter leaf mesh idea and give this a try...

With a lot of hand trimming as you go and bending it to fit the curves of the pipe... I think it will work out pretty good to give my 1971 250 MX Hooker Pipe a somewhat OEM styled pipe.

Here is the first rough layout as the bending of the metal was being worked mostly by hand.

Still need to get the edges trimmed and cleaned up for some smooth outer lines and add the proper button head hex bolt for the shield. I think this will give me the look I was going for...
