"Just an FYI regarding Partzilla. My experience has been if you can buy it on Partzilla your local Yamaha dealer can get the parts as well w/o shipping costs."
Here in the UK, the same principle applies if you can find a part at Fowlers.
Even though Fowlers are the wholesalers to a load of dealers, you'll still get a part cheaper from your local bike shop (even taking into account standard mark up) than direct from Fowlers.

"Automan: Copper spray a gasket.
2 coats and let it dry, then assemble."
I've used that in the past, but have read many places that if the mating surfaces are good dry is fine, so I thought I'd try it this time. So far it is, after about 30 miles. When I installed the previous gasket I used a thin layer of grease, and that seemed fine as well. Not using grease may mean I'll need a new gasket next time I open the case, but we'll see. I sure LOVE having a solid clutch now! Don't have to baby it on acceleration, and it's safer too, merging into traffic.

Just got a new clutch cable from eBay and installed it. It is absolutely identical to the OEM cable in every way.

The old original was still fine, but I figured it's 54 years old, and I don't want the clutch going out during a ride. It's a smoother pull now, so maybe some of the internal plastic cable coating was degraded?

By the way, just curious how many folks here lube your clutch and front brake cables? Out of curiosity I cut the end off the old cable and pulled it out, and the plastic (Teflon?) sheath on the cable itself was completely intact, after 54 years. I recently put some lightweight oil in there, which had it well coated, but I keep reading conflicting information whether it really needs lubrication or not, if it has that sheath. Some people say it can just attract dirt, or even degrade the sheath.

Yamaha recommends lubing cables every 1000 miles and I still have my little black and gold Yamaha cable lubing tool I got decades ago.
I've found the little aerosol cans of special motorcycle cable lube can make a difference in cable pull effort.

I just used some lubricant I already had for my RV, which is very similar to Lubezall by Yamaha. It has PTFE and dries, so it doesn't attract dirt. I removed the lever and used the small straw into the cable housing to spray it in.
