JT fender stripe width was created by Schu

Can someone tell me the proper width of the center stripe on the JT fenders?
I have three of them and not one has its original paint…..
I sanded thru one of the adolescent paint jobs and it appears to be 60mm or 2.38” inches. Just want to confirm.

I did a search, but there are only 2 pages left on the mini enduro section…

There was a variation apparently.  Here's an old post I saved:

I retrieve a trashed-out rear fender from my attic that’s the older design without the inner fender reinforcement. It still has the original Yamaha off-road warning label and the dealer sticker so I’m 99% sure the paint is original. The Desert Orange stripe on this fender measures 63-64mm wide (see pic) whereas my other bike cited in my previous post measures about 60mm (can you say “manufacturing variation”?).  Looks like anywhere between 60mm and 64mm is in the ballpark for the rear fender stripe.  Me personally, I’m going for 62mm on the rear fender and 52mm on the front fender.

As as far as the masking question, neither of my rear fenders appear to have any of the Desert Orange on the underside. The are (were) basically all white on the underside (see pics).  Perhaps some other JT1 owners can chime in and help clarify these details.

THANK YOU MARK!

I’m knee deep into my first attempt at painting and masking for the two color scheme. I have done my bodywork and have painted the white base coat. I am now trying my best to mask off for the fender stripes. I’m disappointed in my brand new Yamaha front fender! The mounting bracket is not centered on the fender….. so do I center the stripe to the bracket, or do I center the stripe on the fender.

I masked it off with the stripe central to the bracket and it was obvious in the different amount of white along each side. So I pulled the tape and will now center the stripe on the fender which puts the mounting bracket offset on the stripe. I can probably slot holes on the fender brackets to try and get it looking proper when installed.

I might try masking it from the bracket out to the fender ends. In other words, center the stripe at the bracket and tape it outwards to the ends while bringing it central to the fender. No that will look like crap. I’m going to center the stripe on the fender and so what for the offset mounting bracket!

Since you said you had the white, I assume you are painting it the Red/White JT color scheme. Not sure if the dimensions are the same as the yellow with black stripe color scheme.

Here is a picture of my Yellow/Black fenders, pretty sure they are original paint and patina:  imgur.com/a/NaTftqs

The front is 2 inches wide and the back is 2.5 inches wide. You can see the front bracket is not aligned. Looks it was in a head on collision before I got it!

Thank you JayB and MarkT. That helps to see one with its original stripes. Man there are a ton of cracked front fenders out there. I think they are often stress cracked and not necessarily a result of a spill.

I masked the rear fender at 60mm and the front fender at 50mm which is very close to what you measured. I assumed front and rear were the same width, so I’m glad I reached out for verification. It’s not that I am obsessed with originality, but I want it to look proper.

Im heading out to paint the red in a few minutes. I will tackle the gas tank next weekend and then clear cote everything. The link below shows how well the auto body paint store matched the original color. I touched up the oil tank because I wanted to keep the original dealer sticker on it. The tank was pretty rough but I think it turned out pretty good. You can see where I masked it off, but I’m happy with it. I’ll wet sand it before I clear cote it. That clear cote makes things look better than they really are! lol

Well it’s done. We will see when the clear coat has laid flat and hardened. I think I will need to wet sand and buff this clear coat where I didn't have to on my 360 paint job. I am happy with the tank stripes. It is NOT as easy as you would think to get them laid down properly. This link should scroll.

Thanks. Any idea how long I should wait to wet sand and buff?
