74 GT 80 was created by principal282

Next up is my childhood bike, a 74 gt80.
I will try to add some photos in a bit.  Brilliant red.
the good:
it’s a bike dad brought home for me in grade 5.
the gas tank is in very good shape all things considered.
wiring looks to be okay as I carefully took it off.  I have one cut blue and one cut black no idea why
it actually cleaned up decent
the controls and Speedo cleaning up fairly nice

the not so good but expected
compression is bad
no clue on the magneto yet.
tires are dry rot
lost key (ordered, knew the code)
major oil pump questions.  It looks pretty greasy in that little compartment.  DEET don’t worry if this is not good I know better than to try mess with it.
The seat was what was left of the foam and a pinto bean sack

needs eventually
1st over piston and rings
probably seals
clutch and brake controls
speedo cable and cable end to tire
tires
brakes

like I told my better half, I already got all the tools to do it!

my dad wanted me to take it home and work with it.
dad is 75…he has advanced cancer, taking it a day at a time.  I guess it’s a nice way to keep him and this childhood memory in my thoughts.  He has seen his 73dt3 go from barn rot to a piece to be pretty proud of, and I would love nothing more than for him to see this one going too.

None of my bikes were mine from the start. That would be so cool. That little GT has a lot of potential and should be a fun one to fix up. Regardless of what you do with it, the memories will always be there.

This post is a good reason to never sell any motorcycle because you'll always regret it. Amazing to still have the original bike you received as a 5th grader.

Might be tough to find a 1st over piston. Yamaha branded pistons are really expensive. I found Forseti pistons that are sold out of Australia much more reasonable but they only come 0.50 mm and 1.00 mm over (second and fourth OS). If you rode the wheels off that bike as a kid it may need the second OS anyway.

Thank you!!
Yeah it’s not a lot of fun seeing him deal with it. I’m gonna check with enduronut. I am certain nobody ever been in this before.

Today I worked on a switch. The headlight switch. I have to say I am happy I figured it out. Just cleaning, ran the cases through the cleaner, resoldered the blinker contact.

Managed to not lose a single spring or do dad. Somehow. It was like a big puzzle because of course it doesn’t come apart nice, it went ka-pew. I have to commend the engineers though man things fit just perfect. I had one copper piece with a slot left, it doesn’t help make contact with the hi/low I’m thinking it sits on top of the black plastic internal piece. It looks very nice.

I should have been disassembling today but I got this new little cleaner and wNted to test it out.

Nice project. Best wishes to you and your Dad.

P.S. Check with Enduronut on tires too.... he used to have a few for the little bikes.

And yes I’m now positive that’s where mr. Copper goes, because I went back after supper and fits there perfectly. It all works mechanically and wires are sound

Thanks Mark. He’s been my go-to!

I know DEET would probably shake his head knowing I opened up that switch but it turned out. I need to find some grey sheathing 6 and 8 mm. DEET i promise if the oil pump is mess that will be sent right in with no attempted repair first !! LOL

It’s amazing how thoughtful these handlebar switches are made… I’ve not disassembled anything new, but if they’re like the newer tube amps, micro/mini and unrepairable, I’d not want any part of it.
