Need Help!!! 73 CT3 175 was created by dallindabus

So I recently got a very nice barn find CT3 and everything on the clutch side was taken out. The bike won't engage in gears obviously, but when it's rolled backwards every 7 inches or so it sounds like metal snapping. What Is this and how do I fix it? Also I don't know how to rebuild the clutch side, some photos would be very helpful. Thanks for reading

Did the person you bought it off say why he pulled the clutch off--looking for the problem you describe i'm guessing?. One possibility is on the opposite side directly above the front sprocket if the chain has broken or come off & got bunched around the sprocket it can wipe off the end of the gear selector drum where its secured to the left under a 3 screw triangle cover. Take a breath lol--then if that happens it can try to select two gears at once--sort of--& doesn't like it. Will be obvious if that's the cause just by pulling the left cover & having a look.
No17 in the link & breaks that off along with the extension of the drum under it letting the selector drum float free. Be unlucky if it is that though.
Or as Rick C says above & lots of pics please.
Worn out Chain might be climbing up on a hooked sprocket which will show up worse going backwards. Also might have a tooth off in the gearbox itself--hope not but sounding more like it.

I'll send some pictures, but it's weird that it makes the noise in reverse. The guy I bought it from was the grandchild of the guy and he died before finishing working on it. Maybe it had a slippery clutch? Or maybe the front sprocket is worn down? Because I remember my dirtbike sounding like that before I changed the front sprocket. the sound of the massive clicking is coming front the front sprocket

That chain looks awfully tight...  so my first guess is with Rick on a bad chain.

Second guess is what RT325 said about the end of the shift drum broken off.

One thing that looks strange is it looks like the bearing on the clutch side of the output shaft might be missing?  Might just be me.

Yes it is Mark and that would cock the shaft over on change of rotation direction as there's no support from the bearing. Maybe thats the racket .Plus the rear sprockets goosed.
I have had three engine cases where that bearing has spun and grooved the case. Real pain in the hoop.
Also Dalindabus, make sure you get the correct idler gear. Yours's should have the small groove on the outer side. The teeth are different than some earlier models that haven't been modified .

I’ve had a couple years of experience with working on engine already running but I need this put in a way a Noob like me can understand. Maybe a red ring on a picture of what I’m missing? A picture of a engine the same as mine? Anything will help a lot!

I haven't found a picture that clearly shows what it's supposed to look like...  but here's your picture with an arrow where the bearing looks to be missing.

where you took the idler gear from, that shaft should have a needle roller bearing in the case . 2nd pic
on post 4.
I also see you have the older type gear with the wide teeth.
I'll see if i can find the thread relating to the kick start shaft mod and post it here.
