Can you post pictures please? An MX175 doesn't have much wiring at all... it sounds like you might have a DT175 someone stripped.

And if it has a magneto... no battery required. In 1979 it should be a CDI ignition so there should be a electronic CDI box on the bike... On the MX, it's under the gas tank. On the DT, it's back behind the air filter on the right side of the bike.

Not trying to step on anyones toes but I have 2 of those 79 MX's and mine actually has the CDI by the air filter as well. Also,as Mark said, they did not come with a battery.

Not stepping on any toes at all! Thank you! I've only had one 79 MX and it had the CDI under the tank... It was a higher serial number... looking at parts diagrams now mine was wired like a 1980.

Anyway, still doesn't have "tons of loose wires just layin around on the bike" and it does need a CDI box (electronics)...

And there isn't any wiring on an MX to even connect a battery to... still thinking it might be a stripped DT175 model but who knows what someone might have done....
