Fuse question for 69 L5T was created by Noviastar

Gearing up to clean some of the mess of wiring from previous owners.


I noticed Yamaha still has sorta a main fuse holder assy.

it seems to have a point connector not one that screws on somewhere. Does anyone with a L5 still have that stock wiring setup and could tell me where that plugs in at?


The battery cable seems to have the fuse box off some junction. Its just I'm not so great about wiring and this thing has a lot of iffy patch jobs and old connections.

I was thinking of adding just a nicely made in line square type fuse assy. I don't see anything in the book about wire gauge.

Copy of schematic follows. I went and looked at my bike and this is what I found. The voltage regulator has a large red battery connection and a small red wire together. One side of fuse is attached to the small red wire. The red wire from the ignition switch has a double connector on it. The other end of the fuse holder goes on one side of the plug and the red wire off the back of the regulator goes on the other position on the double connector.

What gauge wire would you all recommend? 4,6,8? I see a lot of cables sizes available.

Think 4 might be to stiff. With the cramped spaces in the battery compartment.

Looks like the battery wire with lead is used on a lot of Yamaha ATVs in the 80s. and seems like its available. so ill snatch one and its fuse housing.

That part number is for the positive battery cable that has the small wire I am speaking of. One end to the battery and the other to the regulator and the small wire free end to the fuse holder. Wire size maybe someone will chime in but I will look. Can you tell me where on your frame the negative battery attaches. Is your harness butchered up?

I'm confused by the question... battery has to have a larger cable for the starter that is not fused... the wiring from battery to the fuse, regulator, and switch (which looks like tees off the starter cable) can be much smaller. Like 12 or 14 gauge or maybe even smaller considering the length.

If you can measure the diameter of existing wire (the copper part... without insulation) there are charts that will tell you what gauge they are.

Well I cleaned up most of the mess. the Ground wire is still rough.


its much cleaner than the tangle of twisted spaghetti and electoral tape.

I do like the new fuse box. it can take a few lengths of 20 amp fuse. it clamps on the ends with a spring and claw like bit. you can store a extra in it. BUT the way it holds together is only that rubber wrap around it. No clamp or screw or anything.
