Hullo! was created by daveystewart28

Hullo, I'm Davey, originally from Scotland but have been down south, living amongst the sassenachs for a long, long time now.

I bought what I thought was a 1971 DT1 US import last year, but after checking the engine number on here I now think it's a 1972 DT2.

Yamaha often manufactured a frame the year prior to it actually being commissioned, so you could well have a date stamp of MM/71 on your 1972 model bike - my 1972 RT2 has a frame date stamped 1971.

Photos would be great, although you need a 3rd party site such as Imgur to post them via.

Welcome from NZ. The giveaway 'is' has it got reed valve inlet.
Easy to distinguish between the two just looking at how the carb mounts up--to the cylinder direct with an insulating block, or to an alloy housing that has the reed valve inside. Reeds started in "72 with DT2. Obvious tank difference too with flip top not turn on top in "72 plus shape change. Pics via an external source to link here. Best of luck & look forward to photos sometime.

Thanks for your replies. Imgur isn't working on my Mac for some reason so I've tried Imagecoast but my link was removed and attachments isn't working so I dunno how to get a picture up, sorry.

It does have a reed valve, and the flip top petrol cap. I took the top end apart and had it rebored as it sounded like there was a bit of piston slap. It's had some port work done previously too and takes off like a scalded cat when it hits the power band.

It's all back together and running sweet now apart from the seat which is causing some ball ache to find a replacement which doesn't require a mortgage.

I gather that the DT1 and DT2 seats are different but does anyone know if an RT2 seat will fit a DT2? I've been trying to find seat schematics to no avail.

The original wasn't too bad apart from a rather large hole in the vinyl on one side and some cracks in the base but I'd really like to replace it.

KDI do a repro kit. I think that they sponsor the site and there is a link on the right hand side of the page. However, link below to speed things up.

Have a look at their other products, just in case anything else takes your fancy.

A load of the DT/RT 2/3 parts are interchangeable, including the seat, but not sure on compatibility with earlier DT/RT1.

Thanks for the link. I have seen these kits but really I'd like a finished product. I bought a new seat cover for mine but it doesn't have the sewn in bead so not a direct, just fit it replacement, and my upholstery skills are somewhat lacking.

I can relate to that. I've bought some kits from KDI as well as some original seat pans. My upholstery skills are also lacking. I found an old auto upholstery shop near me which are rare now. I brought them 5 seats to assemble. Charged me $50 each. Came out perfect.
The hours spent riding my Enduros is not deducted from my life span.

I've found this place in the US - Texavina dot com
They make just about every seat apart from the DT2/RT2 but I'm waiting for a reply to see if he can make me one and what the cost will be.
Their DT1 seat, even with delivery is not too steep.

Welcome Davy,
Nice to see a fellow northerner on this great forum. About 4 years ago I bought a seat, control cables from KDI (seat in a kit), and they  are spot on. Everything fits as it should. Only downside is the import tax to the uk.
