British AT1 owner was created by Tommyuk

Hi all!

my names Tom, I live in Margate, England and I have a USA imported AT1 1971 that I’ve owned for around 3yrs. Stripped and rebuilt but kept the patina.

it’s road registered but I mostly use it for light off-roading at events like the Malle mile .

looking forward to drawing on the knowledge of the forum to try and rectify my running issues and helping others where I can.

cheers

tom

Welcome from NZ. I have a similar but older AT1. Yours "should" be "72 or "73 in theory because i can see the reed valve inlet, plus tank is "72-3. All a small point but could become a big point if ordering parts. & just to confuse 'us owners' Yamaha in their wisdom used AT1 prefix from "70 until "73 inclusive. Any problems please ask away. Is yours electric start as most of the US ones appear to be [12 volt battery ignition etc]. Mine is magneto ignition & kick start only which we got here & in Australia. Well, we got both but Mag ones were a better seller & performed a bit better as not having to spin the heavy generator starter setup. Anyway--your having lunch & i'm going to bed. Cheers from half a world away.

Thanks guys.

I think I was having a brain fart yesterday. Mine is an AT2 , according to the vintage Japanese motor cycle club. Even though both frame and engine number begin AT1 !

Manufactured in November 1971

yes it’s electric start. I’m hoping to change it to magneto if I can find the parts.

cheers

tom

Welcome!

Crank stub is different on magneto model so it's not just a matter of finding a Yamaha magneto

You can get a modern 12v CDI magneto from VAPE.   No more battery required to run and no more electric start.

Hi tom, if i can find an oversize piston for my rt2 it will be at the malle mile, if I can’t find one it will be the rattlyist bike there. Either way see you there.

I copied the info on the VAPE below:

I helped Powerdynamo develop the kits for the 125 and 175 Yamaha Enduros.  They had a confused mess originally from building kits for owners and their dimensions and had roughly 15 very similar kits.  I did a lost of test fitting and narrowed it down to 3 kits that fit all the US models.  The owner sold to his main part supplier, VAPE, when his health declined.  VAPE has kind of made the catalog hard to read.  The old Powerdynamo listings are still there though.  www.powerdynamo.biz/deu/systems/lists/yamaha.php

Scroll down the listing and you'll clearly find your bike...  www.powerdynamo.biz/eng/systems/7729/7729main.htm

Then you can go to the VAPE shop and find your kit...  they have it listed under the DT125E.  Not sure why the price is higher than the CT kits?  Used to be about the same.   Could be the rotor on the electric start models is a lot heavier so Powerdynamo used a heavier flywheel.  Maybe that flywheel got more expensive?  If you can talk to VAPE, they can machine the lighter CT flywheel to fit your crank if that's the issue with the price.
