Itschrisb brings back a ‘74 DT250. was created by Itschrisb

Hey y’all new member here and I’d like to start a thread documenting my build progress on my new to me 1974 Yamaha DT250. I also figure I can ask questions in here when needed also.

A friend of mine had this bike for a few years and after not much convincing he agreed to sell it to me. It has ran in 5+ years and doesn’t have a title but I plan to take care of that. The odometer reads 10k miles, I’m personally not familiar with 2 strokes so I’m not sure if this is high or low.

The tank wasn’t to bad but I decided to clean it out anyway. I used a mixture of The Works and water, let it sit overnight and then flushed it out a few times and filled it with gas. Running the gas through a filter and clear line, results are great!

It’s also caked in dirt and oil so I spent a little bit power washing as much as I could off it. Still not perfect but much better than it was.

After some fiddling yesterday I was able to get it to fire up and run pretty well. Afterwards I ripped the carb apart and gave it a really good cleaning. Someone previously removed the oil injection pump so it’s currently just running on premix. I have a pump and lines on order a long with a bunch of other parts. They should be here later this week.

Overall plan for the bike is to slowly restore it and enjoy it in the process. As I mentioned I’m brand new to 2 strokes. I’ve owned a few Yamaha xs650s over the years so I know enough to work on this.

 from the UK.

That looks like a nice "Rider" you've found there.

I snapped this photos yesterday after cleaning up the tank, oil tank, and seat. Shines up pretty good. Still waiting on parts to really move on.

I should have mentioned in my original post that I am US based, there seems to be much more support for these bikes else where. A lot of parts companies I’m finding are UK based. I always found that interesting, my xs650 was the same way. Seems people in the US don’t value the older bikes as much.

I think the UK boys will get a chuckle out of the comment that there is more support over there than here...

Lots of support in the US...  maybe not big companies with shiny websites but much is out there if you know where to look...  including the Yamaha dealer network in the US where many parts are still available.

Funny enough I did find a large Yamaha parts dealership about an hour from me.

My main comment was more so every time I ask about parts everyone directs me to yamabits haha

Also there seems to be more aftermarket support for these bikes else where. Again I could be wrong but just what I seem to have noticed.

Try partzilla.com or rockymountainatvmc.com for stateside parts. Or as said, any Yamaha dealer can order parts for you.

And oh, by the way, kdirepros.com makes three-piece rubber repair materials for you gas cap.

Ordered what I believe to be the last of the parts needed refresh everything. I spent some time dialing in the carb and adjusting the clutch cable. I took for a few trips up and down the street and it seems to be getting better every ride.

For some unknown reason my kill switch stopped working. I checked the wire and connections and they all seem to be good but there could be a break somewhere I’m missing.
