Adjusting rear shock… DT175 1978 was created by MikeK-uk
Hello all,
I want to increase the preload on my shock. I understand that the spring seat stopper screw needs to be removed and then the adjustment collar is rotated clockwise with a c spanner.
Sorry for maybe stupid question, but does the stopper screw hole in the adjustment collar rotate as I turn the collar? Access looks very tight and I foresee that it will be hard to replace the screw and nip it up if the hole rotates 90degrees (for example).
Or is it best to remove the shock to adjust it?
Many thanks,
Mike

The early type is a threaded adjuster. No need to remove the shock unless you're dealing with corrosion on the threads or something. There is a hole for the set screw every 1/2 turn and I've never had a problem reinstalling the set screw.
An old school modification if too soft still was to use the heavier spring from the 77-79 DT250/400... you can use the whole DT250/400 shock.

P.S. If you take the weight off the rear tire (bike on stand or assistant lifting up on frame), often you can turn the adjuster by hand... tool kit had a special spanner that works great.

No the treaded hole doesn't rotate, only the ring rotates, then lines up with the threaded hole i was thinking every turn but might be every half turn if i read Marks comment correctly which means two slots. Hard to go wrong though but slot in the ring limits your adjustment to what the slot allows. Mind you it's been a long time so i could need correcting?. No damping adjustment on those & if it gone all bouncy then she's toast. But I still have "78 shock here which was still ok when removed, or hope it is as just sold it online haha for 45 dollars. Was a green dt125e I think. Good bikes but I never had the motor.
