72 DT2 Key Switch was created by goatboy56
Working on a DT2 and the the key cover is ripped out and a screwdriver was being used. I have a couple CT2/3 switches and comparing the wiring diagrams they look the same and the only difference is CT has a plug for 4 of the wires and the DT are bullet. I want to know if I can just use the top chrome piece from the CT switch and leave the original base and guts. Thanks, John

Bodies and lock will be the same, although wiring on the base is different - I'll see what images I can attach.
If I've understood your question correctly, then so long as the plastic plate with the wires soldered to it mounts in the same way, then you should be able to do what you want.
The link is to the CT switch diagram in the Tech Library, and the image is my sketch of my RT2 switch.

I have 2 and one base wiring is the same but the top chrome is not the best. The other one the base wiring is different but nicer chrome. I want to just replace the top with the key tumbler and will be using all the internals from the original. On the nicer one the wires are brittle so have no problem stealing the top from that one if it will work.

They had at least 2 different "layouts" but as long as you can get the guts to fit, it should work. Note that you can sometimes install the internals 180 degrees out of sync.
What I do is test the switch during/after assembly using the "map" on most wiring diagrams that shows what colors connect in each switch position. Example below is from a CT diagram I think... it has the day and night charging circuit circled... green connects to white in day riding key position, green/red to the white in night riding position.

Thanks Mark. What I am hoping is to be able to leave everything in the original base (with the bad top) as is and just install the new top without messing up the internal guts.
Edit: It looks like I still have to pull everything out to fit in the top so if I can keep it in order and fits I should be all right.

Success. Was able to take the top off of the better one that had the different wiring pattern and use it to replace the damaged one. Confirmed using wiring "Map" so it looks like the top and tumbler are the interchangeable.
Thanks

Well done.

If it was just the cap that you changed over, so are still using the barrel that had been "screwdrivered", then bear in mind that all of the levers inside the barrel might be damaged, and therefore the key might fly out as you are riding along!

Best to change the whole barrel over. By doing do, this also means that the number stamped on the cap remains matched to the barrel below it.
Either now, or some time in the future, keep an eye out for a switch of the same era where the wiring is butchered, but the barrel is good - this way you can resurrect your original DT2 switch. I've been doing a similar thing on RD400 seat locks, where the barrel is fubar - those era bikes had the same barrel in the ignition switch and seat lock. Buy a repro key (master locksmiths and online sellers use the number stamped on the cover to cut the correct key) and make sure that this remains in the barrel when you remove it, otherwise the levers will fall out!

Hi Al:
I did change the whole top that included the barrel and key that was off of one that I got with a parts bike and not sure what it came off of as the wiring on the bottom was different. I was able to replace it without touching any of the wiring and used the internals from the original DT2 one.
