Piston Ring Help Please was created by Brzn

I had a small oil leak from the cylinder jug base gasket and was going to change it out today. Can't because the gasket I'd received is wrong.

Anyways, figured I'd clean the carbon off the head, piston, and ring groves.

Everything cleaned up real nice,

However, while removing the rings and scraping out the groves this came out and I didn't notice from which grove.

It's from the bottom, correct. There are three pieces in the bottom and just one in the top, I believe.

I believe bottom is correct but I'd wait for the real experts to chime in.

What did you mean by  "There are three pieces in the bottom and just one in the top, I believe." ?

Those ring expanders break sometimes.  Should be one piece.

Hmm...
If the piece I'm asking about in the picture in my original post goes in the bottom grove there are three separate pieces. The piece I pictured goes between the actual ring and another piece in against the piston.

Is there an expander behind each ring?

Leave them out, they break & sounds like it has. I don't think the Dt2--DT3 has an expander behind the top ring being an L shape ring. So that leads me to think you have a later piston fitted if you ever need new rings. In saying that--new rings would be a plan seeing you're right in there now. But i'd take the pison right off to give the grooves a good clean. Once the new rings are on hand then i'd break or cut the old rings in half & run the end across the grinder & scrape out the grooves with the rough end right to the bottom of the grooves. Ring peg is a pain but can get right up to it.

Starting to sound a bit like someone has fitted new rings & put the new expander over the old carboned in broken one.

If there is a ring expander there is only one under each ring. They aren't ever "stacked'.

Sometimes the expanders are under both the top ring and the bottom ring.

I think it's the Keystone rings that don't use expanders? Straight rings do and the Dykes (L) rings might?

It's hard to remember for sure, so many changes were made to pistons/rings over the years.

I have NOS OEM DT2/3 cylinders, standard, first oversize, second oversize and third oversize pistons and rings. The standard, first and second have expander rings in both upper and lower. The third oversize has the expander ring only in the lower.
The hours spent riding my Enduros is not deducted from my life span.

Nothing's broken, misunderstanding where I stated three pieces. I meant three rings; two expanders and one ring. Sorry about that, and I've cleaned the carbon from the ring groves top and bottom..
So, if they're not to be stacked, the one I've pictured goes in the top grove behind the L Ring. The bottom one already has one in the grove. As far as I know, I'm the first to be inside the top end and everything's original. The original owner I bought the 2,000 mile bike from didn't know how to do much maintenance.
