The cases are painted? was created by hcdiiiga

1973 DT3. I was looking at LETSJET's unbelievable polishing job on the engine and picked up in the thread that the cases are originally painted. I had no idea, I just figured it was dull unpainted aluminum. I want to spiff up the engine before I put it back in, but that kind of polishing job looks like it would take a 55 gallon drum of elbow grease in addition to a can of Simichrome. Are people repainting the cases? if so with what? Goes for the head as well.

That was a 1968 model..

Some later models like yours were polished.

Another bit of trivia is the "YAMAHA" cast into the covers had raised letters or indented letters depending on year/model.  Sometimes the covers are identical otherwise...  occasionally you'll see a bike that has a mismatched clutch and oil pump cover.

'68 DT1 case covers were painted. Possibly some '69 and '70. Yamaha polished and clear coated starting around '70.

This is a NOS 68' DT1 magneto cover.

'68-'71 the Yamaha letters were raised. '72-'73 were recessed with black paint.

As Mark said there are mismatches out there.

Clear coated.... I just let half a can of 2K clear coat expire beyond it's brief shelf life.

Guilty again..... I have mismatched covers on my CT1B. That's how I know it's mine.

I rode my CT-1 to a local vintage bike meet last weekend, and there was a restored 1970 AT-1 there. I noticed that the engine cases were painted, and wasn't sure if that's how they were originally, but this thread answer that question.

My '73 LT3-100 has painted case covers. The NOS magneto cover I bought for it is also painted.
