73 DT3 250 New carb question VM26 or VM28?

Ok
First off let me thank everyone that gave me tons of great advice on sorting out my rich unning issue. For thies not in the loop the Needle jet was not original and looked to have damage repair from someone grabbing it with pliers. I found that fuel was not only getting in past the brass washer but the overall operation of that unit must have been either too large, modified or worn to oblivion. Not having marking on it made the overall reason a bit clouded. It must have come from another carb

On to my question
I am shopping a new carb. I was searcing adn it appears there are others running a VM28 instead of teh 26mm. The price for me is the same.
Not one to leave power on the table is this a good running set up? By my measurements I can sneak the package in between the stock airbox and intake. (factory plastic spacer removed)

Advice? I am not as well versed on 2 cycle engines as I spend my days building Brit twins. Jumping to a bigger carb usually is accompanied with engine modifications

This motorcycle is very stock, jut overall new/refurbished.
Engine rebuilt bearings to spark plug by previous owner and air tight by my testing. It sounds new!
Stock New exhaust - no clue where he got it. So nice I want to put it on the shelf do it never sees damage
Stock new air box and new intake boot. I installed a new Uni filter in the stock box

With my only modifications in mind being a change of the pipe and reed valves when i figure out the good purchases I am assuming the VM28 would be a good choice? I will speed most of my time buzzing around town and hitting the back-roads and fire trails on this bike. Not to mention I really like to pop wheelies and dazzle my friends

Pretty sure the 73 DT3 comes with a 28 already. Should be fine, I run a 32 on mine

Not trying to steal the post, but the OP may be interested as well. What is the purpose of the plastic spacer? Is it to reduce heat transfer from the cylinder to the carb? Is this something the OP should remove?

"Yes" on the heat transfer... "no" on the "should remove" except that I expect the OP is going to install a spigot type carb using a Mikuni rubber adapter which will insulate carb from heat and vibration as good or better than stock bakelite spacer.

Yes I am installing a spigot type with rubber adapter so the original spacer is moot

Def a 26 stock. I am thinking 28 is a simple upgrade

if you go with a new carb, 26 or 28 will be rich, as they cover a wide displacement range. Try & find out basic info, pilot jet size, main jet size, throttle cut out, air bleed sizes and needle jet info.

Understood. Out of the package they are not set up for this application. Nice part about Sudco they pre jet them specific as a baseline. I bought a Sudco VM for my 75 Suzuki TS400 and it was perfect out of the box. Pre jetted for my bike.

I run a 32 on my DT1 off an RT 1-2 or 3 with no problems.
