Gas Tank Stripe Location was created by YamahaRT1

All,

I'm getting ready to have the tank painted on my 1971 RT1. The stripe is long gone and I've never actually seen one in person so I am looking for some guidance on stripe location.

It looks to me on the top side of the tank, the strip is outside of the body line crease (IE on the gas gap side instead of the badge side). On the bottom of the tank it looks to be inside of the body line crease. Does it cross the body line at the front of the tank?? It looks like it does but that just seems like it would be very challenging to make the strip look right.

I borrowed a picture from another member's post and outlined what I am talking about. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I've went on Ebay and bought old original parts to match up my restorations. If you buy parts for reference they can be pretty beat up and cheap. Also I hope you get the stripe painted red as 71 was red and 70 was yellow. You noted you have a 71. Also what about the oil tank paint? Should have double red stripe on oil tank. I just had my 71 RT1B tanks painted by Marbles Motors. They do a lot of Yamaha paint jobs and sell the paint if you want to do it yourself. Google them if interested. Randy is the owner.

Yellow stripe tank looks off to me... and a repaint.

As was suggested, search ebay for pictures of ORIGINAL tanks or find a painter that knows what they're doing...

That sample pic you have is wrong, don't use that. Pedalcrazy has a good idea, but if you don't want to buy an original paint tank there are also many images on this site that show correct stripe location. Look at this thread:

Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. Good to know the first tank isn't correct. I've been looking through some of the pictures that Apex linked, those do help but I am still a bit confused on what happens to the stripe at the front of the tank. If anyone has any close up pictures in this area I'd appreciate it.

I'm going to try to find a local bike in southern California to look at in person

Here’s a pic of my original ‘70 CT1B tank. Line placement should be the same as on your larger RT1 tank. I hope this helps.

I can help you out with some pictures as my RT1 has it's original stripe.
Bit late in the UK now but I can take a look tomorrow.

Mark, that's my tank in the picture and the stripe is original.
I did repaint the black and clear coat the tank afterwards.
The picture does make the stripe look fat (the camera adds 10 pounds) :)

Thanks to everyone that posted pictures! I was able to find an old tank to get a look in person. It turns out the stripe does cross the body at the front of the tank and now that I know where to look I can see it in your pictures. Mystery solved! I'll try to post pictures in the daylight this weekend.
