Uni 1409-st fail was created by Tom P

I've had this Uni 1409-st  filter on my CT-1 for about a month, and after a long ride today, I just noticed it was hanging off the carburetor and the collar had torn. I noticed that it's very soft rubber, and actually the carburetor opening is a little bit small for this filter, so maybe when I tightened down it just was too much for it? JFYI

Hey Tom, maybe you can repair that with the proper type of glue, and then use Teflon tape to bring the carb inlet to a desired fit. Seems a shame to pitch a fairly new filter.

I think maybe it just couldn't take the heat. On the CT1 it's getting a lot of heat coming up from the crankcase, and where it failed was on the bottom of the collar. I sent a message to the seller to see if they could either replace a refund, if not I'll just write it off. I put my metal mesh pod back on, I only ride on the roads right now anyway.

Is there a way to put some foam filter over the metal pod?

Actually that was something I was thinking of trying to do, put some foam around the metal one. I might try to salvage some from this unifilter and see if I can wrap it around there. It's outside of the return window so I'm eating it, oh well.

This is interesting, I had it up to 65 the other day, and since I put the metal pod on now it's starting to cut out at 55 like it did when my main jet was dirty. I checked the main jet and it's clean as a whistle, I'd already cleaned it with an ultrasonic cleaner. I tried both spark plugs, and both of those are clean as well, and gapped correctly. I wonder if I'm getting too much air now when it's WOT?

I did some experimenting and found the problem. First I cut a piece of inner tube, and put it over the mesh pod filter to cover about half of it, just to restrict the air. It ran worse. Then I rode without an air cleaner and it runs perfectly. No stumbles and I easily got over 60 mph. Then I realized something I hadn't really thought about, the opening on the pod filter is much smaller than the mouth of the carburetor. So even though I thought it was letting too much air in, at WOT it's like it has a restrictor on it. So I need to find another filter that does not have that small restriction.

I have a pod on my trail 90, and it doesn’t have that big hunk of rubber like yers…
No way to use a fillet knife and carve some of the restricted stuff out? U til you get it sorted out?

I thought about that, but the actual opening of the metal is restricted. When I first started working on this bike back in March, I  bought those inexpensive pods really quick because I didn't have any air cleaners. It never occurred to me that the restricted opening would cause a problem, but it does. I've already ordered another one that looks like it has a full opening that will arrive tomorrow. I want to ride to a vintage bike meet on Sunday :0)

Got the new pod and it has a full size opening. Went for a ride and it runs great. I'm just going to roll with this for now, I'm only riding around town, not off-road, and it's not a rural area where I could run into dust storms That's said, I'll keep an eye out, maybe there's some kind of foam sock you can put over these things?
