1975 DT250 trans oil dipstick was created by chadfitz
Im changing my oil getting ready for spring. Found the thread talking about the fact that it may take overnight to settle and read correct on the dipstick. Im hoping it does and will check in the morning. Because after I filled it with 1 liter, it reads about 2" up. While I wait the question I have is, the dipstick is about 5-6" long with only about 1/4" with crosshatches. Is this correct? Hi to low mark is within that 1/4"? I just want to make sure I have the right dipstick. ..
Thanks
Thanks

That sounds correct, but I will go out to my barn tomorrow and pull my dipstick and measure it for you.

Both of my DT250Bs have the same dipstick as you described.
And yes, the proper level is that cross hatched zone at the very end.
You do not thread it in for checking the level.
You insert it until it contacts the threaded portion, with the bike upright and not leaning on the kickstand.

OK thanks.
Update: came out this morning and it is still 1 34" up the dipstick, so about 1 1/4" to "full/high".
So...
Did i not let it drain long enough?
Can I run it to warm it up with it this high? In order to completely redrain it?
Or should i just use a syringe to remove the extra?
Curious just because i didnt think i could screw up draining and refilling the oil!!!!! Go figure.
thanks

Syringe idea sounds good if you got one that will dip into the oil. Less hassle than a partial drain. I don’t know the results of starting it when overfilled.

UPDATE: I didnt have a syringe, so I put the bike on a stand, rear tire off ground.
set the dipstick in the whole but did not thread it in(figuring this would not allow any pressure to build up.). started the bike, put it in gear and let it run like that for maybe a minute. shut it off, put bike down, checked oil, and it was perfect.
So i guess it took putting it in gear to let the oil go to wherever it needed to go.
thanks for the help

You might want to check it again after it sits for a while. If you checked it as soon as you shut it off like you described, then you didn't get a proper oil level.
WRONG!

You might have checked the level "by the book"? Instructions say to warm up bike for several minutes before checking. Nowhere does it say to let the bike sit a while before checking?

Ha……
I’ve been doing it wrong since the beginning!
I always thought you had to let the oil settle back into the sump, so to speak.
I really shouldn’t answer questions……
