Hello,

So it has recently been brought to my attention that my older brother claims that I lost his key to his 1979 Yamaha dt125 Enduro motorcycle nearly 25 years ago. Therefore, this motorcycle has been sitting in the garage since then because of the missing key. In an attempt to put this all to rest I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions on getting a replacement key. I do want to mention that we live in the country so to have any access to a locksmith means paying alot of money to have them come to us. Is there a way of getting a replacement key or do I need to just change out the ignition? Give me your thoughts!

Thanks

Get the key number stamped onto ignition switch , and search on ebay  yamaha  key # **** .
Often precut keys are available .

But yes, quite a few key cutters on fleabay who will cut and post to you a pattern key using the number on top of the barrel - I always give the bike year and model as well.

You can't use the ebay link as the display text or link won't show...  fixed it for you.

Other links copy and paste directly into text just fine.  I suspect ebay made a change that no longer allows remote linking to the auction page as the glitch started about the time it seemed ebay made some changes.

Looking at the link below they still ran a points magneto in "79 so simply unplug the ignition switch in the headlight & you'll have runner. Just be sure you have a way to stop it incase it runs away--so to speak. 'If' it's a cdi mag then same applies--just unplug the switch & ride off into the sunset--but get home before dark as no lights, or they'll blow if you rev it so creep along as lights won't be regulated. On the other hand re lights, they could be safe as think they had a handlebar light switch & would have a regulator by "79 so you'll know straight away if you bring the revs up a little from idle to get an idea if the lights are regulated to a safe limit. Motor will go as intended though. I see link below says generator but means magneto in this case.
