DT 400 Dieseling was created by tgill
I have a '76 DT 400 that was just put back on the road after a long sleep and I noticed a lot of dieseling at low RPMs. She bucks quite a bit in 1st gear before building speed. What kind of adjustments should I be looking at?

My 75 DT400 does the same thing. So I’ll be following along to see if you can sort it out. One thing I’ve done that made a noticeable improvement overall was replacing the needle and the nozzle in the carburetor. Many people said the big bore bikes have a substantial pulsation that wears out the needle and nozzle. It made such an improvement that I did the same for my DT250 with similar results. I’d love to do the same on my Dt360 but I cannot find a replacement nozzle.

Thanks, and I remember reading that thread!
I wasn't sure that I used the right term as "dieseling" can sometimes mean running after shutoff. What I describe is a bucking at low RPM's in gear. 10 MPH in 1st gear can be a rocky experience!
I'll check into a nozzle and needle. Probably Ebay?

Yep you described it perfectly. I got mine thru DEET. But I have seen them on eBay as well.

Schu,what series is your DT360 needle jet? 164?
The 159 series is not identical but some have successfully used it to replace the 164. Just get the same size (0-2, N-8, whatever it is.)

Only guessing as to why it running ratty off idle if i understood it--i'll go read again properly!!
But if the idle mixture is set too rich--like right in & should be out about 1.5--2 turns max.
If the needle jet & needle combo is worn it'll blubber rich & that's a reasonably comon problem with those in old age & high mileage.
If the choke is accidentaly left open--choke on--then it'll goes all up the creek especially after closing throttle then coming up again.
Also, if it lacks top end performance don't forget the exhaust & deep in the tail muffler.
