DT175C change shaft was created by Schu
Is this normal "change shaft" movement when the oil seal has failed?
Or do I need to do more than simply replace the seal?

Unfortunately, "normal". New seal won't fix slop. That 74-76 shift linkage design was not one of Yamaha's best.
You can still find NOS covers for a decent price sometimes, hole for stub shaft in case might be wallowed out too though.

Thanks Mark. I’ll replace the leaking seal and keep an eye on it. My bikes don’t see much use, so it might be fine for a few years!

this might require a case split to set it up right, but I wonder if a steel FLANGED BUSHING would work. For example, ID of bushing close to shift shaft diameter, then OD = custom. To compensate for flange head, a 1mm or so thinner seal could be used.
edit: mark350, was thinking same.

I'm sure it will be fine for a long time. I don't know that I've ever seen one that wasn't worn?
I've packed the area under the shift sector cover full with thick grease and that seems to slow any oil leaks.
