A disciplined approach to kick starting may help avoid this. Even if it's not necessary due to a decompressor I always take a moment to find TDC and reset the kick lever ratchet before giving it the boot. I can imagine a possible scenario where a kick from the wrong part of the stroke hits compression just as the kick runs out of steam. If it went just far enough to trigger a spark before stopping and bouncing back it could cause something like this.
