swapping 125 engine for a 175? was created by alexdubs
Hi there,
I purchased 2 basket case 74 and 75 dt125's that together will make one really solid one.
I've stripped one of the bikes completely down to the frame, grinded all the rust off, primed and painted it and have started putting things back together. I ordered new shocks, new tires and am starting to get into and am very excited!!
long story short, before I started breaking into the bike, I ordered this charging system after having a very brief conversation with the revival and assuming it would work. Well, it doesn't and they won't take it back. I've posted it online for sale, but no bites yet. So, instead of getting rid of it, I'm trying to find alternative solutions.
My question is, will a 75' dt175 motor fit inside of a dt125 frame?
Or do I have to finish this project and get a dt175 as my next project?

Looks like ya having a ball--till it wouldn't fit. Man don't ya hate that. Will the stator plate not mount up. I can see yours is electric start [we got magneto & electric models in NZ but mostly mag. So your crank won't have the long thread. Is the threaded crank hole where the armature bolt ran be big & strong enough to retain the flywheel. By memory they were only about 7mm or some odd ball size. The original armature probably weighed a bit & stayed secured. Or is the flywheel a lot bigger diameter & make it harder to keep still.
I see you're only showing the 125's in your pics. In "74 the 175 motor changed shape & mounting points but most likely the top end will swap over as think they're still the 4 long sleeve bolt holding down style. I've even got a TY175 top on my AT1 with same holding pattern. As usual i'm happy to be proved wrong--how i learn lol.

If we're talking 74-76 US model DT125 with the electric start, engine will not fit a 74-76 DT175 frame, mounts (especially lower rear) are different.
The electric start DT125 kept the 69-73 AT/CT design... The DT175 got a redesign in 1974 as RT325 said.
The other problem is the earlier design has a 130mm stator plale and 74-on DT175 has a 120mm stator. Crank ends are different too.
The ignition you bought fits the DT175 cases/crank? You could order a 130mm stator plate from VAPE (just the aluminum plate) and use the 175 crank in the 125 engine. That would work.

That is exactly right, I have the electric start model and the new stator wont line up. Crank doesnt have the long threads as it had the armature that was held in place with a pin on the spline. and yes, its all held together with a long 7mm bolt.
I think I'm following you in terms of ordering the 130mm stator plate, although I wonder how I could make the flywheel stay on.
I assume there is a 125 that does not have electric start and that would have flywheel/magneto? I don't mind geting rid of the electric start since I can probably start the bike with my arm, especially if I upgrade the system...
**update, the plot thickens, I can order www.powerdynamo.biz/deu/systems/7729/7729main.htm directly from vape which wouldnt require any modifications, and they claim that revive should be able to take backl the original one I ordered. Lets see what happens. Such a pain in the ass ordering something to canada from an american distributor that gets the product from wherever vape is in europe. should of just dealt with vape directly....

Just curious, why do you want to replace the original system?
I can see it looks a bit ripe, but looks like it would clean up.
I have an AT1-C which I'm currently restoring and having used the electric start, I think it's great.
Anyway, good luck with your bike

You'd have to swap the crankshaft which I think I said?
Best solution is go directly to VAPE which is what I always recommend.

Whatever you do, hope it works out!
