Silver paint in UK was created by peteyam54

Hello, has anybody in the UK, found a good match for the silver paint used on mudguards and headlight etc used on the DT250A. All the current recommendations seem to be USA only, and I don't to spend loads on RS paints. Thanks

Hello Peteyam54.
I laughed when i saw your post at the torment you would endure trying to find a good match here in the UK.
All the good stuff is banned . The silver RS offers is good but water based and difficult to apply without experience.
However ,if you can find Holts HSILM15 or Hi coat Ford moon dust silver and give it three coats of Spraymax 2K lacquer you will be near enough. Both a little lighter but as good as. If you want a good finish you will end up spending more than you anticipated, otherwise you'll possibly end up doing the job again and spending again. If you repair a dent as well and have to use other products such as fine filler, the chemicals in aerosol will react to them sometimes so i would also recomend you use barrier coat. Of course, non of this is necessary if you get good paint which is unavailable as you've discovered.

Thanks Shyted, that's really helpful. I was getting a little frustrated! - it's hard work restoring these bikes in the UK. Just one question though, what is the benefit of Spraymax 2k lacquer over any regular lacquer? (as its about 4 times the price). Cheers. Pete

Hi Pete.
A very simple answer. It's four times as good.
It resits fuel and oil and is 2 part. You release the activator by depressing a red push button underneath the can.
Put it in very warm water first . Shake it like hell for ages before and after you release the activator.
Don't be to far from the paint when you apply it.After every application, wipe the nozzle as it dries like rock. If you wear glasses, put goggles over the top as it sets  on the surface like rock.Needles to say wear a mask and cover your hair with a cap . I got it on my hands spraying the head lamp bowl. What a job i had getting it off,so wear plastic gloves too.
Pete, have you seen the pinned paint thread on here ?
Go to Forums and it's in one of the first two catagories.

Regards Dave

Thanks Dave, really appreciate your advice and tips. I have already ordered the Holts silver, so I'll bite the bullet and order some Spraymax laquer too. Judging by the pictures you attached, it looks really good stuff!

Yes, I have seen the paint thread - that was the start of my frustration where everything recommended seemed unavailable in the UK!!

Thankfully, my tank is not too bad so I intend to leave that as is for now. The next decision is the frame, whether to spray it myself or get it powder coated ......... (and whether to go gloss or satin).

Cheers. Pete

No bother Pete.
I have had quite a few frames done with powder coat. My GasGas trials bike was powder coated from the plant so i have redone it that way.
I have also had a couple of Yamaha frames powder coated too.
However ,from now on, i'm going to get them stripped and dipped with Phosphoric ,make any repairs necessary then paint them and give them the spray max treatment. I think the finish looks better.
You want urethane paint if you use paint.
