DT400 any difference between 75 76? was created by Buggin
Hello,
Picked up a 75 or 76 DT400 that has been sitting a long time. Started cleaning it up and surprise, no VIN numbers! Going to try and straighten it out with the authorities but in the mean time is there any known difference or markings besides the VINs? Hoping to save this one from the crusher, bike is otherwise complete.
Thanks

hypothetically speaking, it might be more advantageous to educate seller and get my cash back vs putting the heat on them and getting zilch

76 had a factory installed voltage regulator... slightly different lighting coil setup.
Carb was slightly different so probably has a different number stamped into it.
Easiest to spot are graphics... especially 76 only saying "enduro" on oil tank and heat shield

Ok then it must be a 76 because it has the "Enduro" only text on the oil tank and heat shield. Thank you for the info.

I also found some hardware differences, the bolts on the fork. Chrome 13mm on the 75, un-chromed 12 mm heads on the 76. Plastic formed bracket for the tach/speedo/key switch on the 76, steel on the 75. Slight differences in the headlamp mount hardware, the rings that hold them around the fork tubes and between the triple clamps.

Here's a video of my 1976 DT400. It was bought new by my cousin and is all original besides mirrors, plastic plugs in mirror mounting holes and tires ( I replaced front tire after this video). It came with the 250 stickers on the tank (thats why he bought it). Has 1261 miles on it now.

I like the way the Cardinal is whistling at yer bike..
Do the mirrors perform well like that? I've not seen that way of mounting..

Beautiful bike but what’s up with the tank??? The graphics are for a 75 250 but tank for a 250 should be red. I didn’t look to see if you are overseas. Maybe UK bike IDK. If it had the 76 graphics for a 400 then wow jackpot!
