New air cleaner / new bike was created by Schu
My CT2 had an air filter cage that was neatly wrapped in a couple layers of thin gray colored foam rubber. I decided to splurge and buy new Yamaha air filter foam. Wow what a difference. This thing obviously couldn’t breathe. It hits so hard now that the clutch slips! Ugh….

It’s amazing how a proper air filter can make these bikes run so good… (:

Same situation on a different bike. My DT360A has a fresh top end from the previous owner and I have been going easy on it for the 300 plus miles I have put on it so far. The bike doesn’t run as well as my other DT360A. Not even close. So yesterday I removed the aftermarket K&N filter (gauze type element) and took it for a ride with no filter. HUGE improvement!! So again I have improved performance by changing back to a genuine Yamaha air filter. I never realized the sensitivity of using a proper air cleaner element.

Good point, Schu.
I could be wrong, but I've always thought that jetting needs changing if non standard air filters are fitted.
