I cut up a piece from a black mouse pad and used upholstery spray glue. It worked great and also worked for the bottom of the battery box. I know its not original but the idea is.

‘72 DT2, I just happened to receive a shipment of some fruit from Harry and David’s while I had my battery box out. The foam that was in the packaging protecting the fruit was the exact same foam; same thickness and same cell structure as what I was pulling off the battery box. Only difference was its color, a pale green instead of the beige color of the original foam.
The foam I used was 1/2” thick. I’ve no other measurements, but you can see in the below pics where the original foam was.
