DT2 headlight bucket alternatives was created by AirborneSilva

Has anyone replaced there stock DT2 headlight bucket for a more modern bucket that can/will accept a newer sealed beam light?

When searching, make sure you are on "search forum".  A simple phrase like "replacement headlight" yields many results including NAPA 4020 sealed beam.  4020 or a common 5 3/4 H4 reflector fits in the stock rim by simply using spring clips from a later model.

Clips can be bought from Yamaha or MikesXS.  www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-headlamp-w-clips-pk-5.html

You can buy a kit from Pobit on ebay but he is away until the 24th.

Thank you Mark!  I may try installing a regulator (not sure if it has one, haven't looked), and give it one try with stock setup, I did find one for $81, I'd rather not waste the money but am trying to keep things as simple as I can since I'm not that great with electrical.

If all else fails I'll check out Pobit and see what he's got.

I’ve been playing with a different way to hold the 4020 bulbs in where Yamaha clips won’t work. It’s not perfected yet but here is a quick attempt. Want to use thicker rigid plastic and better springs but this one is holding tight Against the rim.

Alright, I think I have this sorted out. Cut out the bottom of a cheap plastic cereal bowl, picked up some short springs and drilled a small pilot hole below the old swivel anchors. Worked perfectly. Light is held tightly against the rim and even has some vibration absorption. Perfect for the 4020 replacement bulbs. Pretty stoked.

Looks good ADGUY2112, my only concern is left and right adjustment.  Maybe it's not needed, don't know, but I like the simplicity of your fix...

Just a thought but have you thought about adding something like this to keep the springs from ripping through the plastic...

Out of the box thinking! Will it get too hot and warp the bowl? You'll keep us in the loop 2112, eh? (a fantastic album from Rush)
Airborne, can you just turn the handle bars.. left or right?  Clowning there...
