Burn out RT1 exaust? was created by rachter
Just wondering if I can damage the exhaust on my 70 RT1 by doing the campfire burnout to clean out the carbon and oil.
I saw somewhere on here that there could be a problem with damage to the packing or baffles?
Thanx

HI Rachter, It is unlikely that the baffles would be harmed. Sometimes when making sleeper pipes we would see that the tubro spark arrestor clogged up with carbon. After burning out the carbon/oil in the pipe I would CAREFULLY using a small diameter welding rod knock off the carbon clogging the spark arrestor.

Should be good in the campfire overnight. I used to do all mine with the oxy--acetylene plant from work when gas was free. I'd get it burning then turn off acetylene & turn up the oxygen which sent it mad. Then after a bit i'd get the compressed air in there to carry the burn right through. I think that was probably a bit much & possibly destroyed the perforated shield holding the deadening material against the walls. Those perforated shields used to break up anyway without my help. Therefore after 50 years of doing it wrong i now think overnight campfire is best & more gentle. So long as its hot enough to burn the carbon inside.
