RT1 1970 gearbox questions please was created by Tinker man

Good day all,

most here will be aware of my RT1 that is a gift that keeps on giving…. Mostly bad news.

following on from my clutch/kickstart and tachometer opportunities recently discovered I am reaching the conclusion I will need to remove the engine and get into the gearbox.  When I first picked up the bike it had no cover on the gear lever side of the bike or lever attached.  The bike was cheap and matching numbers and I was assured there were no gearbox issues… right.     Being smitten with the idea of an early RT 360 I nodded enthusiastically.  Well…..

finally decided to try and select gears after clutch, kick start and idle gears.   Here are my observations.

the gear selection by the change levers on the dowels seem a bit hit and miss but may need better set up or potentially a new spring?  but the bigger issue is that I seem to be able to select “5” gears but neutral seems to be between where I think it’s selecting 3rd and 4th?   Has it been apart and thrown back together incorrectly? I suspect so…. Is this a known issue ( I did search here and elsewhere but no luck). ?

Could it have something to do with the neutral stopper?  I did remove this accidentally when draining the oil… I know, I. Know.    Could the cam stopper have gone back in the wrong place when I refitted it?

words of wisdom welcome.

other than that I think I am going to have to remove the engine and split the cases.  That should be fun as I have never done that before.

i always seem to want something I realise that, but I can only ask.

thanks ever so much, Ian.
I love taking stuff to bits - putting back together is another thing altogether.
