The turn signals in headlight bucket have two wires coming from the switch on the handlebar. L=chocolate, R=Dark Green.
The connector is double barrelled and also feeds the rear turn signals.
I would recommend you test things with an ohm meter.
MAKE SURE you don't connect power to ground. I see you mentioned black wires. Are the turn signals aftermarket? If so, better post a pic.

Originals have Imasen cast/moulded into the inside and the lens respectively.
Yamaha probably standardised to black wires to enable the indicators to be used on either side.
I have occasionally seen a very short green or brown sleeve over a wire.

Yamaha recommend it is spliced into one of the blue wires from the clock illumination lights.
I found it easier to make up a pigtail with a single male bullet at one end and a double female at the other. The male bullet replaces one of the two existing blue males from the speedo and tacho illumination sockets, that go into the existing double female blue. Whichever male you removed goes into one of the pigtail females, and the regulator wire (should have a male bullet connector) goes into the other.
Make sure that the regulator is earthed properly.
